Why They Want to Substitute Teach
I want to be a substitute teacher because I genuinely enjoy working with children and want to bring stability and consistency to classrooms when the regular teacher is away. As a stay-at-home mom for the past 15 months and a sitter for an infant since he was two weeks old, I’ve developed patience, adaptability, and a natural ability to connect with kids and keep them engaged and on task. I also spent a year working with children in Virginia, which gave me experience managing groups of kids in a more structured, classroom-like setting rather than one-on-one care. That experience taught me how to follow lesson plans, manage a classroom, and keep students focused even when routines are disrupted. Substitute teaching feels like a natural next step for me — it lets me use the skills I’ve built through childcare and my time working with kids in Virginia, while giving me the flexibility to keep balancing life as a mom. I care about creating a positive, structured environment for students, and I take pride in showing up prepared and adaptable, no matter the grade level or subject.
About Them
I’d describe myself as patient, warm, and easygoing — someone who genuinely enjoys being around kids and finds a lot of fulfillment in caregiving, both with my own child and the families I work with. Outside of that, I enjoy spending time outdoors; foraging and learning about mushroom identification is a hobby of mine, and I love being able to share that curiosity about nature with kids I’m caring for. As for my worldview, I believe in creating a calm, consistent, and encouraging environment for children — I think kids thrive when they feel safe, heard, and given room to be curious. I try to bring patience and a steady presence to everything I do, whether that’s soothing a fussy baby or helping a classroom of students stay on track.
