Why They Want to Substitute Teach
I am applying for the Yale Teaching Fellows program as I consider pursuing teaching full-time. The program is designed for career switchers looking to go into Education. Fellows in the program receive their Education Masters and owe time to New Haven Public Schools as a classroom teacher. I am determining my next career path and hopefully becoming a substitute teacher to help sharpen my teaching skills.
About Them
I am a mother of a 5 year old boy with Autism who loves music, ice skating and travel. I am a world traveler myself having visited nearly 80 countries.
Experience with Children
My most meaningful experience working with children was in Cambridge, Massachusetts at the Phillips Brooks House Association where I was a classroom instructor for a program Cambridge Youth Enrichment program. During that program, I led classroom instruction for the 4th grade class over 6 weeks. I created curriculum, delivered instruction and fostered collaborative work to maintain and enrich the students. Classroom instruction was daily (4X a week) covering both Math and English and Fridays included enrichment field trips of my design including visiting to the Boston Science Museum. I have similarly worked with older children (high school) teaching Math in a summer program apart of New Haven Public Schools for Aspirations for Higher Learning. During that summer program, I lead 5x daily instruction over 8 weeks include pre-Algebra, Algebra, and Geometry concepts.
